OUTDOORS
Tracking outdoors
New to RunLine? Start with First steps. If the course floats or seems to drift as you walk, check the floor height first.
The Quest uses cameras and motion sensors to work out where it is. Fixed, recognisable features help it track your surroundings and keep the course position more stable.
On a new field
Look around and take a short walk before positioning the course:
- Start near fixed landmarks, such as a fence corner or a building.
- Look around slowly for a few seconds, not just at the ground.
- Walk a short loop at a normal pace, move your head steadily and return to your starting point.
- Then position the course.
You do not need to walk the whole field, and you do not need a special scanning mode. Take your orientation walk before opening RunLine or while it is running. After the first walk, you do not need to move especially slowly.
Use fixed reference points
Look towards fixed landmarks around the field, such as fences, buildings, trees, gates or signs. Open grass gives the Quest fewer distinct features to recognise. On very open fields, fixed, high-contrast signs can provide extra reference points.
People, dogs, moving cars and flags are less useful as reference points. Obstacles you are moving can also change the scene. Look towards fixed objects outside the course as well.
Put the headset back on in the same place
After a break, put the headset back on near the same landmarks, facing roughly the same way. A spot with several fixed reference points works best, such as a fence corner next to a building. This helps the Quest recognise the area again.
Check the lighting
Even lighting helps tracking. Overcast skies or shade can help. Direct sun, backlight, strong reflections and sharp contrasts can make it harder. That is why tracking on the same field can vary with the time of day.
If the course suddenly jumps
If the whole course jumps, RunLine has not necessarily moved it. The Quest may briefly lose track of its position or update its estimate.
- Do not move the course by hand straight away.
- Go back to a familiar part of the field.
- Look slowly at fixed landmarks and wait a few seconds.
- Only realign the course if it is still in the wrong place.
If you move the course by hand straight away, it may be left in the wrong place once tracking recovers.
The routine I suggest
- Start near fixed landmarks.
- Look around briefly.
- On a new field, walk a short loop.
- Return to your starting point and position the course.
- After a break, put the headset back on in roughly the same place.
